Statesman and Positron look to the future of City of Heroes and City of Villains.

As City of Heroes celebrates it second anniversary since the original US launch, Cryptic Studios’ Creative Director Jack ‘Statesman’ Emmert and Lead Designer Matt ‘Positron’ Miller consider what lies ahead for the dedicated heroes and scheming villains of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles…

Hello “City of” Players,

Amazing! Today we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary of City of Heroes. I want to thank you, our players, for your support and enthusiasm over the last two years. We look forward to growing our community for years to come.

I mentioned earlier that Matt Miller, Positron, has been promoted to the role of Lead Designer. He’s been with us for several years now and brings a lot of new ideas to the table. If you’ve got a question, let him know! Send a PM, post it – because Positron is more than willing to hear what the fans say. And Positron has his own vision for the game that he’d like to share…So, without further ado – take it away, Matt!

To the “City of” Community,

I’d like to start off by saying that I’m very excited for the opportunity to continue leading the heroes and villains of the “City of” franchise into the future. One of the best things about MMOs is the ability to continue to develop and improve them, adding new content and features to the games we love; and one of the most important parts of that is the feedback from you, the players. Everyone here at Cryptic values your comments, both the positive and the constructive. Please continue to share your opinions with us, and we can act on them as we build our future updates.

Speaking of just that, we have the results from the world-wide poll we did recently, which are strongly influencing the flavor of the storyline throughout the next year and beyond. Your opinions do matter, and we want to make the “City of” games something you continue to enjoy. We were looking for a direction for the story, and we wanted it to be something that the players themselves would find the most interesting.

With Issue 7 mostly “in the can” as it were (bugs aside), the leads here have been focusing on the future of the franchise. There is a major effort underway on “end-game” content for max-level characters, the first part of which you will see in Issue 8, which is due out later this year.

Issue 8 will also bring with it the Veterans’ Reward system. This will allow us to give out special thank-you gifts to our players based on the number of months they have been subscribed. These gifts will range from costume pieces to powers to base items and beyond. You don’t even have to do anything to get them, other than keeping an active account.

Beyond that, we are looking to release another Issue building up the story towards our next retail box, due in 2007. This will include going back and revamping some of the zones from City of Heroes, using everything we’ve learned from making City of Villains and Issue 7, plus a bunch of other cool stuff including new powersets and an epic archetype. Of course for the retail box we will be creating all-new zones and content based on the results of the forum poll we posted last month. The retail box will be an expansion to both City of Heroes and City of Villains.

I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. I love this game, and I couldn’t ask for a better community of players to interact with. I am proud to take this franchise we all hold so dear into the future.

its not much ppl the game rocks its just the “origin” selection at the start. its does not reali effect the game at all, i think that you should create a colum of moves for each different origin.
in no way am i critisizing the game i think it rocks but i am just trying to help the game.thank you for listening and hope to here from you response.

This kind of talk makes me happy to keep playing the game and progress with it further YAY :D

Nice one Chaps! (Very much looking forward to the Revamping of the game I play and love most, CoH!)

0Posted by MrJayton on 28 Apr at 20:03

What about a special event where Lord Recluse and his Lieutenants etc appear in the new I7 PvP zone to fight along side the villains and Statesman, Posi, Sister Psyche, Ms Lib etc etc fight along side the Heroes in the new I7 PvP zone. =D Also throw in the Praetorian AV’s for a third faction… now that WOULD BE a GRAND BATTLE!!! For an entire weekend (Friday 8pm - Sunday 8pm) I think Statesman and Lord Recluse will have to rest with the other Heroes/Villains or “attend” to some other matters. I am bursting with ideas here wink

0Posted by havoc fang on 28 Apr at 20:03

heroes...no chance

0Posted by Freerange Bean on 28 Apr at 20:53

Is there any mention of going rogue?? Like Heroes becoming Villains etc.  That’d give the character developement and roleplay an extra depth.

0Posted by Ennil Pwysau on 28 Apr at 21:13

Am I allowed to go against the grain and say…

Another retail box to buy next year? Hmm....
It’d better be good! CoH desperately needs a huge revamp.

0Posted by JIT on 28 Apr at 22:19

0Posted by Frosty Swirl (villian) on 29 Apr at 12:30

looking foward to this smile , but as in some of the trailor videos of CoH where it show states man over the years of his heroic life , him fighting allien attacks and so on , well i was hoping that we could have a major attack like allien invasion where heroes help defend and villains help to attack a war in other words

0Posted by Hidden Kick on 29 Apr at 15:02

Any one know when Issue 7 is coming out? i wanna use and abuse postboxes! cool grin

0Posted by Commander Payne on 29 Apr at 17:21

Man, I’m looking forward to this… I can only hope in the future we have more options when it comes to powers, though… Possibly actual money, as well.

0Posted by The Daring Dazzling Digger (aka nearly everyone) on 29 Apr at 20:50

what will the poewrs be? woohoo more things to test out, can’t wait till we get them its gonna be great excaim

0Posted by Life on 30 Apr at 00:42

Woo something else to put on the christmas list - a new retail box. With any luck you’ll be able to buy and download it online - i dont like having to interrupt my CoH gameplay by leaving the house.

0Posted by Maskulinos1209 on 30 Apr at 10:13

COV:

New archetypes, like the kheldians in COH, but different names and powers perhaps. That would be totally cool! cool smile  cheese

0Posted by GreatCrimsonAvenger on 30 Apr at 10:24

I think there should be 2 extra characters like the peacebringer and warshade when you get to lvl 50 in city of villains. Also you should do another attack from the rikti

0Posted by Radical Ashley (Corruptor, Villain) on 30 Apr at 10:50

The newest issues of City of Heroes and City of Villains look really awesome! I love the idea of an alternate Paragon City where you can battle your heroic or villainous counterparts!

Personally, I think that ballroom gowns would be good for female villains. Something to consider for the future maybe? Good work guys, I love the game!

0Posted by Atomican on 30 Apr at 12:30

I think it might be, City of Civilians where you either get mugged then saved by a hero.. or flee whenever you see a villain, the ability to make comments about heroes/ villains in the background will also be available :D hehe
.. orrr not rasberry

0Posted by H18R5-C819S on 30 Apr at 19:53

Mua ha ha ha… seen the preview of the update? Villains can travel to Paragon City and destroy EVERYTHING!! Cars, Civilians, Trash Cans… And, Masterminds can get Thugs as Henchman. Levels 40-50 for Villains and tonnes more! Did I mention? Mua ha ha ha!!!

0Posted by Silver Devil on 01 May at 00:28

snake city of tomorrow is a great idea for expansion and would strongly recomend it

0Posted by Nightfear on 01 May at 00:58

What about City of Vigilantes? Something inbetween Heroes and Villains, with handgun and other weapon style power sets. Maybe with the option to start in either the Rogue Isles or Paragon City.

The epic archetype may possibly be the Incarnate that has been mentioned before, open to Villains and Heroes.

I’m still praying for the shield power set smile

0Posted by harry on 01 May at 11:17

yah!

0Posted by Legion on 01 May at 14:56

Excellent.  We gather in the sewers beneath your precious Paragon City, we fester in the slums of the wretched Rogue Isles. These brave new lands as yet unveiled hold unparallelled opportunity…

... and we will take it all! vampire

0Posted by wolf_boy71 on 01 May at 16:47

Nice! really looking forward to i7 and i8 lol but just a quick question, is the epic At for villains or heroes??

0Posted by Zebal on 01 May at 19:13

New powers?!?!? New epic Archetypes?!?! This is totally gonna wrawk out loud! I’m not much of a powerleveler, myself, but i do love making needless amounts of alts and getting to lvl 20...over and over again...bottom line : The more powersets, the better. The more Anally retentive little details, the better. Keep up the great work, team! ^^

0Posted by Red Rox on 01 May at 21:19

Oh god yes, pelase please please get that trench coat in!!!

0Posted by Tyrius on 01 May at 23:20

It’s not boomtown that needs to go man, it’s… wait… what’s it called, that one south of skyway… i’m sure it’s ruined or something… faultzone maybe? I dunno

0Posted by Dancer on 02 May at 12:40

So, to get *all* the new and exciting stuff we have to buy *another* box?

Lame, guys. Really lame.

0Posted by Joey on 02 May at 15:36

Hey positron i got a an idea, you should add a new modes of transportation motorcylces and cars.that we could customize to fit our character.such as the i know you got sued by marvel so lets not try for dc,but you know like the “blankmobile"if you know what i mean.

0Posted by Xopha on 02 May at 16:36

Since I have had this game since it came out in England,I am loving the Veteran Reward system!
What prizes await me?!

0Posted by Xopha on 02 May at 16:41

BTW for all those villains out there,
rumour on the internet is that the new Epic ACs for CoV are Blood of the Black Stream(An Egyptian-based one, which may have wings!),Coralax(Common enemies in CoV)and I think there was something else...But Lord Recluse and Statesman are an Epic AC known as Incarnates,so maybe that is the other one?!
