City of Villains Beta details announced

Currently in development by Cryptic Studios, City of Villains is a stand alone expansion for City of Heroes that will let you don the mantle of a criminal genius and pit your wits against the heroes of Paragon City. We know that many of you can hardly wait and are already perfecting your maniacal villain laughs, so we are pleased to announce the first details of the European Beta, which will take place later this year.

The good news for all our current City of Heroes players is that everyone who signed up for a European City of Heroes account in the month following launch (that’s 4 February to 4 March, 2005, date fans) and has been subscribed to the game for at least six months when the Beta starts will be guaranteed a place in the City of Villains European Beta.

If you haven’t yet joined the fight to save Paragon City from the forces of evil, though, don’t despair. Everyone who signs up for a City of Heroes account during the second month after launch (5 March - 31 March, 2005) and has been subscribed for at least six months when the Beta starts will be given priority when the remaining places are assigned.

“It makes sense for us to offer this incentive to our most dedicated players. Who else would be more capable of assisting us in the beta test than the folks most familiar with the way City of Heroes works?” said Jack Emmert, Cryptic Studios Creative Director and Lead Designer of City of Heroes and City of Villains. “The bottom line is that if you subscribe to the game and play regularly you have a better chance of getting a first look at City of Villains.”

We’ll be bringing you lots more news about City of Villains and the European Beta over the coming months, but for now, keep up the fight against crime and we’ll see you in Paragon City…

This is good news, but yet again what about us UK players on the US servers?

We are not eligible for the US CoV beta because we are not located in the US, and now we are most likely not eligible because you won’t have transferred our chars over so we won’t have active EU accounts for long enough, even though we have been playing for a whole year before beta starts!

Unfortunately they don’t seem to know any more than I do about this kind of thing.I’ve contacted them about 3 subjects now, and I’ve actually known more about the situation than them!

I appreciate that, and I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but if you won’t find many players more long term or loyal than me, yet I don’t fit in this guarantee!

I got the game delivered to me 2 days after it was released in the UK and signed up for a 6month plan does this mean I get to play CoV Beta?

Damn, I was going to play Guild wars for a few months until CoV was released.

okay, gona have to make a tough decision in April!

Carry on playing CoH to get in the beta,

Play CoH and Guildwards at the same time,

Forget being in the beta and properly enjoy Guildwars

Lovely, can I ask if, when you say six months, you have had to have PRE SUBSCRIBED to six months or just have been playing for six months, as I am currently paying only the standard 1 month at a time (in case I have a problem with funds) and I want to know if I’m eligible for the beta.

Also, I’m assuming that the EU COV beta wont nessecaily be in 6 months time, so can I also ask if the playing for 6 months is continuous or if youve played for at least six months in any order (say play a month, take a month off then play another 5 months before BETA starts)

Let there be much rejoicing! Although it’s bad news in a way, because mentioning the six month subscription to EU CoH means that the CoV beta won’t start in Europe for several more months at least. Not that this is a particular problem, but it would be moderately irritating if the US get theirs first.

Although if launch is simultaneous or near-simultaneous, I’m not going to complain. Honest /images/smileys/wink.gif

It will be both. With only CoV, you can only create villians but will be able to fight heroes created in CoH. With both, you’ll be able to play hero or villain.

Best news I’ve heard in ages, but just one thing, how will CoV Beta be released to the chosen few. Is it going to be on download or via a CD. I am sure there are more people out there like me who aren’t on broadband and would struggle to download a full expansion via dial-up. It would be a shame to miss out on something as special as this.

@ Azariel: i assume a player will have to consent to general PvP or individual duels, much like the invite to team system. Maybe a request to fight would be sent.

@Staff: Just wondering whether, when the full version on CoV is released, will a player of CoH have to pay subscription fees for both games, or just pay for the game package, and install the CoV software, on the same PlayNC account?

cool news but one more thing though changing the subject couldnt you like have a switch for a char to toggle on or off so they can wander the city witht he switch off meaning they can be killed by villans or vice versa instead of the concent thing as it would be more fun to hunt runners who have decided to fight pvp with out having to ask them if ya know what i mean

The only thing that bothers me is the unbalance of power at the start.... all Heroes will be high lvls and villans will suffer the fate every villan gets… is there any way in which to change a hero into a villan
