S4: The Other Guys take the Cup!
15 Sep, 2005
Tuesday night saw the first Pentad Cup Final on the English servers, when The Other Guys faced off against Team Redemption for the second time in Union’s Bantamweight Division. After a narrow 40-33 defeat in the Semi-Finals, the Redemptions were ready for another try at the Guys, but after a superb match, The Other Guys emerged victorious.
For a full match report and shots of the action, read on…
The Galaxy City Arena was packed, and a huge crowd turned out to cheer on their favourites and enjoy what turned out to be a thrilling contest between excellent teams.
Unfortunately, glitches in the holographic systems meant that the first attempt to decide the Cup had to be aborted. After short break, both teams returned to the terminals and started again, finding themselves in one of the large industrial arena’s, with a central built-up area surrounded by an open road. Battle was quickly joined.
This was a fast, furious, non-stop fight, with both teams making great use of all their abilities and a wide selection of Temporary Powers. Despite the seemingly frantic nature of the action, though, the experience gained throughout the tournament was easy to spot. The combat flowed quickly from one part of the street to the next, and anyone left isolated from the rest of their team quickly found themself in trouble.
Great use was also made of buffs, debuffs and control powers by both sides, with some excellent combination work. The Defenders and Controllers on both sides were certainly kept busy.
There was simply no way to judge which team had the upper hand - whenever one side seemed to gain an advantage, the tables quickly turned. In all, it was a great demonstration of how much skill is involved in a Pentad match.
When the dust settled, though, The Other Guys emerged as the winners. The results were as follows:
The Other Guys - 42 KOs
Poweramp - 17 KOs
Liability - 16 KOs
Masked Skull - 8 KOs
Billy Brown - 1 KO
Wrayth - 0 KOs
Team Redemption - 34 KOs
Lekto - 20 KOs
Zwermen - 5 KOs
Agent Roserk - 5 KOs
EL POLLO - 2 KOs
Dark Infinity - 2 KOs
As Team Redemption had already been defeated once in the tournament (by The Other Guys in the Semi-Final, no less), this victory was enough to secure the Union Bantamweight Pentad Cup. We’d like to congratulate both teams on an excellent display, both of Arena skill and personal conduct - Team Redemption took their loss in great spirits, and The Other Guys were gracious in their victory, complimenting their rivals on an excellent match.
Next stop, the Grand Finals!
